Mono/Screen Prints:
I work in small variable editions of no more than 12 prints. I use many layers in printing each image (up to 60 layers of colour in ‘Landlines’) and ‘build’ the print up in a similar way to that of a painting. I use a combination of layers of monotypes, screen prints and etchings.
In the screen printed and etched layers, each one is created from hand drawn or painted autographic positives which are exposed photographically on to the numerous screens or plates to create stencils.
The prints are part of an edition because each print is made from the same screens or etched plates, or a combination of both (shifting sands i&II).
But, the reason that they are ‘mono’ prints/ ‘unique’ or ‘one off’ prints is because the stencils are not necessarily printed in exactly the same position on each print. This obviously alters the composition and I also change the colour throughout the edition which creates a different atmosphere. In addition to this, I also paint on some of the prints (foreground of ‘Landlines’) and at wipe away areas as they come of the screen bed creating different transparencies.
So they all end up being quite different, unique images with varying atmospheres, which form part of a small 'variable' edition.
