Jill is a Fine Art Printmaker who was born in Dumfries, South West Scotland in 1977.  She has lived in Edinburgh since 2000 but spent 5 years (2002-2007) in the United Arab Emirates where she was one of the founding members to set up the first Fine Art school in the Gulf Peninsula - College of Fine Art and Design, University of Sharjah. She was Head of the Printmaking Department at the College where she was responsible for the design, development and implementation of a state of the art printmaking workshop.

Jill completed a Fine Art (Printmaking) BA(hons) degree at Loughborough University College of Art & Design in 1999. After her studies she returned to Edinburgh and was an active member of Edinburgh Printmakers creating numerous prints and commissions before taking up post in the UAE in 2002.

Jill’s prints are a combination of different printmaking process, mainly etching, monotypes and screenprints. She is primarily concerned with colour and layering. She creates her prints through layers of colours, textures and marks of differing transparencies. In building up each image this way she can portray different atmospheres in her land and seascapes. Her inspiration ranges from the land and seascapes of East Lothian, to the Yorkshire moors and more recently the desertscapes of the Middle East.

Artist Statement

Jill Hodge’s work expresses the sense of awe that she feels from her experience of, and immersion in, the landscape.

Her paintings and prints are a distillation of these experiences. In the stratified planes of her landscape prints, she develops through the intaglio process a personal vocabulary of marks and gestures bound by suspended horizontal lines. Both in her prints and her paintings, Jill uses layers and colours to evince time, change and decay. In her images, she emphasises the transience of atmosphere and explores how it affects light and colour.

For Jill, the main motivation is the awe-inspiring strength and resilience of the landscape and how it contrasts with the ephemeral.
